Pottery Workshop in Delft

Clay Cafe - A Pottery Workshop for Everyone

This is the workshop most people come to first, and it stays the busiest one we run in Delft. You spend an afternoon with a lump of clay in your hands, and you go home knowing your piece will be waiting for you once it comes out of the kiln. You don't need to have done any of this before. Plenty of people who walk in have never touched clay in their lives.

What is the Clay Cafe?

The Clay Cafe is a single afternoon in our studio here in Delft. You sit down with a ball of clay and a warm drink, and Els shows you how to build something by hand. She has been teaching pottery for more than thirty years, so she has a good eye for where you're about to go wrong and a gentle way of nudging you back.

It's hand building, not the wheel, so there's nothing to wrestle with. You pinch, you coil, you smooth the clay until the shape feels right. Everything is laid out for you and nothing is rushed. That's why people book it for birthdays, for a day out with friends, for family afternoons and for taking the team somewhere that isn't a meeting room.

What's included

Who it is for

Beginners, mostly. That's who the afternoon is built around, and most people who join have never made anything out of clay before. Groups and families fit right in. We cap each session at 12 so Els can actually get round to everyone and you're not left guessing what to do next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any pottery experience?

None at all. The Clay Cafe is made for people who have never done this before, and most who come haven't. Els takes you through it step by step, so you won't be sitting there wondering what to do with your hands.

How much does the Clay Cafe cost?

€32,50 per person, and that's everything: your clay, the tools, the underglazes, firing your piece in the kiln, plus coffee, tea and treats. Nothing extra to pay on the day.

Can I come as a group?

Of course, and a lot of people do. It works well for friends, families and birthdays. There are 12 spots in a session, so send us a message if you want to book the group in together.

When can I take my finished piece home?

Not the same day, sadly. Clay has to dry out first, then it goes into the kiln, so you'll pick yours up a couple of weeks later. Els will let you know the moment it's ready.
